February 2025 – UK FIP Cats’ Awareness Month – Week 4

🧩 The missing piece in the jigsaw that is FIP is still timely, accurate and efficient diagnosis and testing. 👩‍⚕️🧑‍⚕️ This relies solely on Vets knowing what they need to look for and actively looking for it! 🔎🆘️
✅ ️Legal, effective Vet treatment exists and is simple to access and administer. 💊
✅️ Cats are alive and thriving many years after using it. 🐈🐈‍⬛🐱🎉
❌️ Barriers to accessing Vet treatment still remain extortionate Vet markups (100%+ in some cases still! 😾)
‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️ 
1 vet last week charged £23 per GS pill and a different charged £46! 
😡 WHAT IS THAT ABOUT!?🤬
And...
❌️ Diagnosis - it is the BIG issue time and time again that owners are battling against professionals to help their cat when it should be a straight forward process of a cat owner trusting the professional to
Know what the most recent official treatment protocol is (and what it instructs) in terms of progressing to build suspicion of FIP (or hopefully rule it out) through:
🩸1. Simple in house blood tests covering key FIP markers (knowing what they are and what trends they tend to show in FIP).
🦠 2. Trying to find and sample fluid and test it for FCoV. 
📉 3. Assessing the cat's clinical presentation and knowing what neurological signs are 🧠👀 - not every wobbly walk or limb ataxia is down to anaemia and muscle loss!
🤔 4. Taking the time to piece it all together and to know that a trial treatment (as indicated in the protocol set out by the FIP Advice Team) will help prove (or hopefully disprove) the FIP diagnosis.
❌️ Gold standard tests of the past which proved cause of death are not what should be done now to very sick cats when FIP suspicion is high.😿

📊📈 A very informative FIP Profile is provided by Glasgow University Veterinary Diagnostic Services. Their facilities and team are world leading regarding FIP. It is not an expensive profile (£53.50+VAT) and samples can be sent with results returned very promptly (est 1-2 days.) All of this can be done whilst starting treatment.✅️

⚠️ It is time to stop waiting for test results that have historically taken far too long to be returned by many other labs. ☠️ Too many cats have died waiting and left untreated - particularly when presented midweek onwards - come back next week is not acceptable! 😾 Time is of the essence! ⏳️ FIP WAITS FOR NO ONE! 😿

✅️ UK cats facing FIP are now in the best position ever because:
🧑‍⚕️👩‍⚕️Regulated, effective medication is easily accessible from vets.✅️
💊 Daily injections are no longer in the picture with most cats able to complete their treatment course with pills or oral drops of GS-441524 from their vet.✅️
💷 Prices from pharmaceuticals to vets for FIP medications are much less than back in 2021/22.✅️
💬 More people know FIP can be cured and cats can go on to thrive and enjoy life with no lasting FIP effects for most.✅️
🐈 The 84 days of treatment one size fits all approach has been challenged and vets can now look to treat the cat in front of them 🐈‍⬛ based on presentation and blood test results etc to determine when, for that cat, giving it more medication won't achieve any more FIP-wise ie the antivirals have done their job.✅️
⚠️ There is however still room for improvement to ensure #itsallaboutthem 🐈🐈‍⬛ and that they experience #LifeAfterFIP 😻 by becoming #FIPsurvivors because everyone knew to #betheiradvoCATe by adopting the lifelong learning approach that #knowledgeispower in the correct hands.✅️
