Welcome to our 3οΈβ£rd annual UK February FIP Cats' Awareness Raising Month! ππβ¨οΈπ
π We will celebrate our FIP Survivors this month with great pride as they have been (and continue to be) pioneers, leading the way, making sure everyone knows that FIP is not a death sentence! βοΈ
πΊ These brave FIP Survivors have been some of the very sickest cats. πΏ
π» Many are now 3οΈβ£+years since initial diagnosis and their Vet FIP treatment and to put it simply, they are living their best paw-sible lives. πΈπΊπΌ
π€ Join us this February in celebrating π these fantastic felines ππββ¬ and #helpushelpothers by raising awarenesss about Feline Infectious Peritonitis! β οΈ

πΎ BARRIERS TO FIP VET TREATMENT πΎ
βοΈ Unregulated Vet markups on lifesaving FIP medication are STILL an issue for too many owners and their cats.πΏ
πΊ We know of many Vets π©ββοΈπ§ββοΈ who don't apply much markup at all! π»β οΈ
They know these medications are a matter of life and death. β οΈ
They don't profit on these medications. β οΈ
β‘οΈ Be like them, these cats are relying on you. π«΅π§ββοΈπ©ββοΈ
πββ¬ππΎπββ¬ππΎπββ¬ππΎπββ¬ππΎ
βοΈ Misinformation regarding the most recent UK Vet FIP treatment procotol content is STILL an issue we hear about too often!
For example, some don't know:
β¬οΈ Increased doses for many
A possible 4οΈβ£2οΈβ£ day treatment length
π§ Treatment trials being the way forward when FIP suspicion is high
π©ΈTesting advised to ensure it is safe to stop treatment (eg AGP test)
π£ Basic, correct advice about regular weighing to ensure the correct dose is given
π How and when to administer the medications eg divided dose for Neuro FIP (and for some other types if and where possible) and on an empty stomach etc.

ππ©Έπππ
Many FIP cat parents are very understandably scared to stop Vet treatment.
πΏ They have witnessed their beloved cat be, in many cases, horrifically unwell (sometimes for many weeks).
π They then give this seemingly 'miracle' inducing medication from their Vet to their cat and within a few doses, their cat is looking, behaving and feeling much better. π»π
Understandably, the thought of stopping this medication and when to do so is scary, especially if the diagnosis, testing and even the administration of the medication has been filled with miscommunication and misinformation.π
With recent research demonstrating a 4οΈβ£2οΈβ£ day FIP treatment protocol may be possible for some (and that a one size fits all approach never was the best way), some owners rightly have questions about what their Vet should be looking for in their cat to ensure it is the right time to stop.ππββ¬
π²π»https://www.mdpi.com/1999-4915/16/7/1144
It has never been the case that a cat is miraculously ok to stop just because it is day 84* (but it wasn't ok to stop on day 83?!) π€―π
*84 days had been the official treatment length as previous studies found this to be the period where the least relapses etc occurred (on smaller doses compared to now etc.)
π So... for every individual cat, Vets should be following the facts provided by the research and ABCD given below to determine if treatment is working and then to determine when the time is right for an individual cat to stop Vet FIP treatment - based on medications obtained from Vets of known content and active ingredient, dosed and administered correctly:
π²π»

π²π»https://www.abcdcatsvets.org/.../factsheets-tools-for.../
"Normalisation of clinical signs and laboratory results, including AGP, are expected before stopping antivirals."
"Successful treatment indicators include a rapid improvement of clinical signs (e.g. reduced effusion, improved appetite, weight gain) and laboratory results (e.g. decreasing globulin, bilirubin and AGP levels).
In studies, decreasing FCoV loads in initially positive FCoV RT-PCR effusion and blood samples have also been documented during successful treatment."

β€οΈβπ©Ή Some owners have found the supportive care, especially for liver, kidneys and stomach detailed on our website, very helpful for their FIP cat:
π²π» fipcatsuk.com/essential-supportive-care/
πΊ FIP Survivor Eddie, pictured here, saw his liver value (ALT) reduce from 329 to 80 π using Hepatinorm as his liver support:
"Eddie was on liver support from the start of his FIP treatment but we saw in his next blood test that it clearly wasn't working for him, it was one needing to be given on an empty stomach and despite my best efforts to fit it into our routine he wasn't absorbing enough.
First image is after 5 weeks of treatment. Second image shows the miracle we achieved after switching to a different liver supplement, one which could be sprinkled on his food. If I remember correct we'd only been using the new one for 16 days at this point!
We weren't expecting such a massive difference especially while still on GS-441524."
#itsallaboutthem so help take that extra strain off their organs (having to fight FIP and process FIP medications) by offering a little extra support where you can. π₯°
